Staggered Stars Quilt
Option one: square. Final size: 60″ x 60″ before borders (15 x 15 rows of squares) 225 total squares
Fabric needed:
Background: 2.33 yards
Points of stars: variety of colors darker than ground
Backing and Binding: 4 yards
Cut:
Points of stars, a total of 50 5½ inch squares 1.5 yd
Center squares of stars 25 4½ inch squares .5 yd
Background squares of stars 64 4½ inch squares 1.75 yd
Background outer triangles 25 5½ inch squares .75 yd
Inner triangles 25 5½ inch squares .75 yd
Squares not in stars (dark) 36 4½ inch squares .75 yd
Total 225
Assembly:
- Make 100 hourglass blocks from 5 1/2 ” squares using the quick method.
- Follow instructions 2–8 below. (See photo for layout)

Option 2: Rectangular. Final size: 60″ x 72″ before borders (15 x 19 rows of 4″ squares) 285 total squares
Fabric needed:
Background: 2½ yd if inner triangles are different
Points of stars: variety of colors darker than ground
Backing and Binding: 4 yards
Cut:
Points of stars, a total of 64 5½ inch squares 1.5 yd
Center squares of stars 32 4½ inch squares .5 yd
Background squares of stars 80 4½ inch squares 1.75 yd
Background outer triangles 32 5½ inch squares .75 yd
Inner triangles 32 5½ inch squares .75 yd
Squares not in stars (dark) 45 4½ inch squares .75 yd
Total: 285
Assembly:
- Make 128 hourglass blocks with star points and inner and outer triangles using the quick method.
- Press toward the dark fabric.
- Press and trim hourglass blocks to 4½ inch squares.
- Lay out blocks on design wall, or queen bed covered with a sheet. (See photo)
- Number the blocks by row: 1-1, 1-2, 1-3, etc.
- Sew together rows. Press seams on one row right, one left, one right, etc.
- Sew rows together by 2s, 4s, etc. Press toward top.
- Add a border if desired. Sandwich.
