Congratulations to all of our 2022 Challenge Quilt entrants! The quilts were very creative, following the theme ‘Jazz it Up.’ Here are photos of the quilts with their descriptions.
Winner of Best of Show
My original version of the traditional New York Beauty block is “jazzy” and includes buttons, piping, velvet ribbon, and final points that are not stitched down. The block is now a flower emerging from the curves of its green calyx. Required fabric is in the rocks.Winner of Best Traditional Quilt
The traditional cathedral windows quilt block is jazzed up by showing how a cathedral might look at night. Some windows are lit by candlelight, others let the starlight in.Winner of Best Art Quilt
Hummingbirds are a favorite bird of mine. Love watching them fluttering among the flowers. Thread painting, hand stitching, machine applique, beading.Winner of Best Interpretation of Theme
When you think of Mardi Gras, you automatically think of jazz in New Orleans along with parades and beads of many colors.Winner of The Cat’s Meow (Most Admired)
This Art Quilt, made during the pandemic, was a way to escape in a more exotic place.Winner of The Bee’s Knees (Most Admired)
Crows and I share a great affection for all things shiny and sparkly. In my quilt, my crow-like friend is stealing a beautiful prize. I used the challenge fabric in the feathers and have embellished the quilt with iridescent fabric, hand embroidery, hand beading, sparkle thread and, of course, Swarovski crystals. When you “jazz it up” in the “twenties,” I think Chicago and “all that jazz”. This is a tribute to the Roarin’ Twenties, the Jazz Age and that iconic Broadway musical turned movie. As an ode to the 1927 original film that inspired the 2002 Chicago, the quilt is 19”x27.” This quilt is inspired by my mother whose idea to “Jazz It Up” was to put on her double strand of pearls. My father gave the pearls to my mother in the 1950’s and each generation since will be touched by their elegance. The challenge fabric was used in the three-dimensional flowers.Picture a singer with an old fashioned microphone. Mike and music notes were made with craft foam for a 3D effect. Her hair is wild and free. The fast fluttering hummingbirds that visit our perennial garden always fascinate the observer. Their bright colors glow and inspired me to use them as the subject for this quilt challenge. I hope the bead work resembles their amazing diverse colors as they flutter and anticipate the sweat nectar from the flowers. All the little birds sitting in the tree singing their hearts out.
